The Varsity B Hockey team won the JV state hockey championship. This is the first time that a Gilmour team has won a state tournament for hockey making this run truly historic.
The Lancers started out Friday, February 23. They had a 4-1 record throughout the state tournament. They knocked off Lake Catholic, Liberty High School, and University School. The Lancers stumbled one time to Toledo St. Johns but then recouped to beat Liberty again in the final to win the championship.
The team was led to victory by Senior Captain Matt Roddy (’18) who led them in hits and made an impactful difference on the score sheet as well. He and his brother, Joe (’21), were able to score the game winning goal in each of the Lancer victories.
Roddy said, “Being the only senior, it was awesome to go out on top. I also got to play with my younger brother which was really cool. Finally, because I had such a close relationship with the coaches, I was able to lead the team really well.”
Another influential player was Frankie Valenti (’21) who was also a leading scorer. The Lancers were backstopped by Dylan Stefan (’21) who was able to shut the door in the final as the Lancers won 5-2.
This run adds to the varsity team’s accomplishments this year as they boast two championships that have not been won by either the varsity A or B team.
