The Historic Moment
At the State Championship in Dayton, Gilmour beat St. Henry, 3-2, on Saturday, November 14, in the Nutter Center at Wright State University. This is the first State championship for Gilmour Volleyball after being State Runners-up in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.
On Thursday, November 12, the girls beat Casstown Miami East in four sets. After dropping the first set, Alexa Turk (`16), Ella Grbac(18), Maria Snelling (`16), Katie Forsythe (`18) and Julia Brzozowski (`17) are credited with kills and digs, which helped the Lancers to win the next three sets and a chance to win their first state championship title.
they play with their hearts and leave everything on the court.
A Wonderful Season
The Varsity Volleyball team has had a fantastic season (26-3). They were crowned district champions after defeating district rival Independence in four sets. With this win, they captured their 10th straight district title in the last ten seasons and a trip to the regional semi-final where they defeated South Range in three sets. After this, they went on to win the regional title, beating Orville, and a bid to the state championships.
Senior Captains Snelling and Turk have been determined to be successful this season after coming up short in the past three seasons. Snelling said, “This season we have worked extremely hard every day, on and off the court. A key thing for us this year was to focus on what we do on our side of the court and not worry about who is on the other side.”
With only five upperclassmen on the court this season, Turk gives credit to her younger teammates. She said, “The underclassmen are very talented, especially sophomores Ella Grbac and Katie Forsythe. Having a young team is beneficial because they don’t really know what to expect. They have never had any of the experiences. Therefore, they play with their hearts and leave everything on the court.” Gilmour Academy must now make room for its newest trophy.
