C.A.U.S.E., Catholic Ambassadors United to Serve and Educate, has decided to exemplify the true values of service within the club.

In years prior, the members of C.A.U.S.E. wrote letters to pen pals at St. Aloysius, an impoverished school and parish in East Cleveland. High school students would send letters during the holidays in hopes that they would receive a note back.

I love making cards for the kids, because even though it’s a small deed, I know that I am brightening their day. I am excited to get to know them as a pen pal.

Ariel Smith (`16) said, “I love making cards for the kids, because even though it’s a small deed, I know that I am brightening their day. I am excited to get to know them as a pen pal.”

This year, the clubs’ leaders, Annalise Minello (`16) and Marley Musarra (`16), decided to add more service opportunities so students could obtain the service hours they needed. Participants can either attend all service opportunities or just a few.

Additionally, the club has de- cided to expand the number of people for their outreach. Club leader Musarra said, “We really want to make an impact on the kids and their families so we’ve gotten involved in more interactive things…” This has been inspired by the club’s administrator, Sister Mary Ann Mehling. She is the Coordinator of the Service Program.

When asked about the reason for the changes made within the club, Minello said, “We were inspired by Sister Mary Ann. She helped us to recognize a greater need for service in the community other than just making cards.”

Students can participate in Monday morning tutoring sessions at 8 a.m. as well as Saturday morning food packing at St. Aloysius school and parish. The tutoring session allows high school students to spread their knowledge to second and third grade students. C.A.U.S.E. members also serve food on Tuesday nights at the church.

Furthermore, there are many collections and donations taking place periodically. C.A.U.S.E. collects school supplies, books, old clothes and canned goods for St. Aloysuis. Then these items are distributed to children and their families within the school.

C.A.U.S.E. meets Wednes- days after school in the library at 3:30 p.m. The club is always welcoming new members. Interested students may contact Minello at minelloa@gilmour.org or Musarra at musarram@gilmour.org.
