As the temperature rises outside, anticipation mounts for the members of the Gilmour base-ball team. And for good reason, as the team has found a lot of success in the past two years and they hope this year is no different.
It will not be an easy task to repeat previous success, for the team went to the State Final Four in 2008 and the regional semi-finals in 2009. However, the team returns veteran infielders Matt Debick (`11), Zach Buehner (`10) and Cam Carmen (`11) as well as outfielders Nate Fiala (`10), Matt Pestotnik (`11) and Graham Boduszek (`10). The pitching staff also returns Jake Hurley (`10) and Mike Zavagno (`11). There are a few newcomers to the team as well such as Brad Gazdag (`12), Jeff Rousseau (`11), Rob Catanese (`12) and Oliver “Ollie” Flesher (`12) who are looking to make a positive impact on the program in their first years of varsity action.
The team was 6-5 going into arguably the biggest game of the season, the game vs. US at Progressive Field. The team lost to tough opponents St. Ignatius, St. Ed’s, St. Vincent, St. Mary’s and the # 1 team in the nation- Walsh Jesuit. The team has also notched two wins vs. a tough Benedictine team and chalked up a bottom of the 7th win vs. Cuyahoga Heights.
The players feel they have the talent and leadership to propel them far into the playoffs. Matt Pestotnik (`11), a right fielder, says, “We have the leadership and the talent to go very far into the playoffs. It all depends on whether or not we can
keep focus through the whole season.” The coaches also have high expectations and believe the team can win.
The baseball team is always on the lookout for fans to come to the games, home or away.
